I have a stand built with 2x4 in all four corners and to the front and back as well. Will this be enough to hold the weight of a 500 gal tank

Forgot to mention my tank is BB thus less weight on the stand. The stand I built looks sturdy. Just wanted to know 2x4 are good enough.

no substrate = more water so i don't think the bare bottom will make any difference

what did you fasten it together with?
it needs to be perfictly level.
and just use 4x4s and i would say 8 of them otherwise you are risking bowing and glass or plexi itt all fails when it bows

Stands kinda freak me out, I have been toying with the idea of building my own stand for the 240 I want useing 4x4's in the corners of a 2x4 frame useing 8 or 10" grade 8 bolts and washers to hold it all together but im scared it will bow. May just cough up the 500 bucks for the stand.

2x4 most likly wont hold the wieght unless u have alot of them. they can hold alot of wieght but.....

A 500g tank is gonna weigh over 4000lbs. From what you stated above, I'd say its gonna fail.If I was doing it , I would 8- 4x4 legs if it is a 8' long tank or 10- legs if its a 10' tank. Make 2 bases out of 2x6s the same footprint as the tank so you have the floor base and the top base. Stand the 2x6's up on end not flat as they will be stronger this way. 3/4" ply on top and a ton of cross braces or gussets in corners to stop it from wanting to shift from side to side

sand is denser than water, so it would weigh a bit less, not enough to make a difference though
