My friend wanted to get some new fish... so he told me to get a tank so that he could give me his old ones. I got a 10 gallon tank with a heater, filter and a light(Ill go get one on monday) and then looked up how to keep a tank. I found out about cycling?? I think my tank is cycled but I really have no idea... anyways, we put his fish in yesterday and now i want to check if the tank is ok! I think I have 3 black ruby barbs and 6 golden barbs in the 10 gallon tank. Any suggestions are helpful!

Wellcome to fish keeping, first of all!

The filter passed from your friend to you with all its material inside? Did it stay unconnected for a long period of time? If the period it was disconnected and not working was short you should be allright.

Buy a test kit on modnay and test the water paramtres in any case. You shoudl have no ammonia, no nitrites and a low count of nitrates, ok?

x2 spend the 20$ and buy a good test kit.. they are invaluable. also I would suggest water conditioner and a high quality food... the "basics" you will liekly never have enough of. It may not hurt to do your first water change at the end of next week. something you should def research about, and of course ask questions of your friend or here...

And Welcome =)

+3 on the test kit although the good ones are $30-35 in my experience. I haven't used the test strips but everyone says they aren't as good as the test vials. I have the api freshwater master kit and it takes about 5-10 minutes to fully test all three of my tanks and when getting started knowing if your fish are being poisoned is huge.

Also, I would get a bottle of "quick start" just to be on the safe side in addition to your dechlorinator. I have had good luck setting up new tanks with it and if you don't know if you have enough beneficial bacteria in the filter it may be a good idea.

Good luck and welcome!
