I’ve been cycling my tank for about 3 weeks now and I think it’s ready for fish to be added. Any suggestions on any steps I should take before I add fish?13809031380904

I would say do a 50% water change immediately before adding a FEW fish, but otherwise looks like the cycle is coming along nicely

I’m on the newer side of this hobby, I was planning on doing a 25% change tonight and testing again tomorrow to see if the levels remain the same, how come you recommend a 50% RIGHT before i add fish? Wouldn’t that big of a water change get rid of too much of the good bacteria and wouldn’t putting new fish in the tank after that 50% water change not be a great idea since there isn’t the same amount of good bacteria?

Bacteria is not in the water it grows on surfaces so a 50% right before the fish would serve to dilute the nitrates making the environment as nice as possible when adding fish.

Ah thanks for the info! So if I did a 50% change tonight is that too early if I get fish tomorrow? Or should i do the water change tomorrow?

That should be fine but dont go crazy on fish add them 3-5 at a time giving the bacteria time to catch up. tetras or barbs vould maybe add a shoal at one time 7-10 would wait like 2 weeks in between adding groups of fish

I did the cycle fish in with filter media so I already have 3 zebra danios and 6 cherry barbs in the tank. I’m planning on having a southern/Central cichlid tank and tomorrow i’m planning on buying a red spotted severum and some bottom feeders, and maybe a couple cichlids if they are in stock.
