I sold my house and have to move in with my in-laws. My 125 gallon tank stand that is in my basement has gotten wet in the past but has dried after time. Im worried that once I empty the tank and move the stand it will fall apart. My in-laws have an old metal desk (the ones that weight like 500 pounds) in their basement that I know can support the weight of the tank. However, the desk is only 5 foot long and the tank is 6 foot long. I'm trying to avoid placing it directly on the floor as we need all the space we can (its me, my wife and 2 kids moving in). If I set the tank directly on the desk I will have 6 inchs of overhang on each side.

Do you think that this overhang will be too much or could cause the tank undue stress that could crack it?

what is the old stand made of?
if its the pressboard crap then good call on not using it agian... if its "real" wood you should be fine unless its falling apart..

as for letting the tank overhang by 6" on each end... thats up to you.. people have done it and had no problems..
i would not do it though.. if it were me id $20 on 2x4s and put them on top of the desk and have the bottom of the tank supported.. just make sure everything sits level..

Is building a new stand an option?
i would either do this or do something to support the 6" overhang on each side. very unsafe-dont want your tank splitting in half! (that would never really happen but you catch my drift :) )

throw a piece of plywood under it and then sit it on the desk, or some other type of wood that will support the last 12" of the tank

Thats the answer right there...done it many times and never had a problem...

if it were a 20 gal. tank I would say a inch or 2 on both sides would be ok, but on a tank that size it would be catostrophic for something to go wrong. wouldn't do it. good luck
