I bought a barely used wet/dry a couple months ago from another MFK member which he said was rated effective to 125 gallons. The pump is rated at ~600 gph. At the time i was planning on getting a 120 gallon, so it was perfect. However, plans have changed and I am getting a 225 gallon. (I also plan on running a FX5 on this tank.)

My question is if I get a larger pump for this wet/dry (~900 gph or so), will it be sufficient bio-filtration for the larger tank considering that I am also running the FX5 with bio in it as well. I do have a little more room in it to put more bioballs/scrubbies as well.

Is there a recommended volume of bioballs per gallon?

FYI....I am stocking the tank with 2-3 smaller species stingrays (Retic/Orbignyi/Hystrix) which notoriously are messy eaters.

Thanks!

I think the formula is around 30 gallons per gallon of bioballs in the wet/dry so your're looking at like 10 gal. more should be sufficient...I currently have a 240 gal. with a mag drive 1200 gph with prob 10 gal. or so of bioballs, I have more space just haven't filled it yet...turnover is great maybe you might want to do something like that...turnover they recommend is at least 5 times I think again these are just numbers and people may have diff. experiences etc. more the better but no problems with mine so far.

Thanks....I think this may just come down to trial and error. Maybe i'll put a bunch of cheap fish in the tank after it has cycled to see how it is working before I shell out the big bucks for the rays.

i think that with u should have no problem running the 2 filters! i have a wet/dry with 8 gallons of bioballs ,with a 700gph pump and i have hob bio wheel on my 150gallon tank i have no problems! and i over feed sometimes! water changes are the key! make sure it's well cycled !! use ammonia to cycle to build a lot of BB to much is okie.. will even out over time..

Your W/D should be 1/3 the size of the tank. If not you need to supplement it with another filter.
