I recently brought a 3 inch green phantom. As per my last post im am new to plecs but wanted something different in the tank.

He seems fairly happy and isnt being too shy, but he does look a little slim. Since I got him he has almost completely cleaned the back of my tank of what I believe to be brown algae (not what I brought him for) but he still looks slim and there are no signs of any faeces.

I have seen him nibble a little on an algae wafer but then left it alone and he didnt care too much for the bloodworm I was feeding the other fish. He seems more set on sucking on the bog wood!!

Is this normal behaviour while he is settling in to his new surroundings?

Wood is a major part of any plecos diet so yes it's normal that's he's eating it. Try feeding blanched discs of cucumber or other vegetables. I know my L165 loves blanched zucchini.

Wood isn't a normal part of all Plecos diet. The only Plecos with teeth shaped for scraping wood are the panaque/panaqolas for the most part. And even they aren't eating the wood itself but tiny bits of food found on/in the wood. Also there is almost no nutrition in cucumber. Zucchini or squash is a better food to feed. Lastly there is no reason to blanch veggies, all this does is remove nutrients and make the veggies brake down faster in the water column...

OP have you tried fresh veggies?

Oh, I thought someone told me it was. So blanching isn't good, I should just wash a piece in hot water?

Not yet, I tried him with cucumber an noticed it had been eaten but as you mentioned, I know there is very little nutitional value in that.

I will try some veg tonight and see how I get on. Would he eat brocolli?

My L200 and L128 LOVE bell peppers. I just cut off the top and remove the seeds and stick a spoon through it to weight it down. Or just take a zucchini and cut it length wise and stick a spoon through it.

I just rinse in room temp water. Blanching them is often a good way to get them to try veggies, but avoid it if possible
