is polycarbonate to use as filter media in an aquarium

Hey, do you guys think polycarbonate is safe for media? I was considering using these pieces called sprues or shred up some poly discs for media in my Filstar xP2. Heres a photo of what I want to use as media....What'cha think?

a guy wants to smash up a polycarbonate cd and use it as filter media.
I told him it wasn't safe. can some one give me more info.

I wouldn't think the polycarbonate itself would be a problem, but CDs have some sort of metallic coating on one side, don't they?
