i have a magnesium based coral sand with some porous rock and good lighting and do the leaves have to be above the water line or can they be submerged

Which can be cleaned off with a damp cloth. So it is up to you to keep them healthy in a home aquarium but they grow naturally in area that see extreme shifts in salinity.
But yes it is a good idea you just need to know they will grow hugenormous in time and will need to be replaced. This can be held off for some time with regular pruning.
