I'm Where I'm At
So the American Music Awards just created a new award called the "Icon" Award. Music Producer Larry Klein explained that the "Icon Award was created to honor an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level. So in the first year of the award's existence they give the honors to...Wait for it...Rihanna???

calling riri an icon puts her on the level of the beatles, Madonna, the rolling stones, Michael jackson, etc. is she a music icon??

I can't remember the last time I even sat and watched one of those music award shows..I used to enjoy them but I guess at some point I must have had enough of them.

Seems to me the words Super Star and Icon are thrown around so much they have lost there real meaning. I think you really have to stand the test of time and have been around a while (a good long while) before any of these words can be associated with anyone. Frank Sinatra is a music Icon, The Beatles, Led Zepplin, Elvis among others can be considered music Icons not Rihanna, maybe in 20 years but not yet. To award this to her now IMO waters down the significance of the award.

agree ^ you gotta span generations to be an icon

I mean, I know she's popular, she's had multiple platinum albums and multiple #1 songs/albums and she's generally recognized right away on a global scale. but I find it hard to see her as an icon

well, you have to factor in that she's from barbados (international appeal) and sold the most digital tracks/albums in 2000s worldwide so she's probably "bigger" then you're giving her credit for.

plus there's not alot of influential young talent in the R&B pool right now. it doesn't make her one of the greatests of all times but clearly she's dominated an era.

i was watching the CMA like 2 weeks ago and they gave taylor swift a lifetime achievement award called the pinnacle award. i thought that was a bit crazy considering she's only 22. however, she's dominated a generation/era just like riri has
