i know that these animals need a very soft substrate on the bottom, but doesn't the porous live rock create hazards for them? especially in caves and tunnels. it seems it could scratch and create a "gash" if you will. or are they smart enough to be careful enough to stay away from sharp edges?

surprisingly they are very good at going through live rock caves without hurting but I do my best to check for sharp corners and avoid any sticking out to be safe and encourage all to do the same.

is there any hazards to placing pvc pipe into live rock (when doing diy of course) to create smooth tuneels and pathways? or would that leech some kind of chemicals into the water over time?

PVC is usually safe if you clean it well. No different than plumbing a filter line with it.

As for rock, most do very well with it in the tank. Just avoid unstable piles, and don't take up all the swimming space with it.

so, im not sure if this is smart. but im reading certain species, especially sharks and eels like a place to hide. has anyone ever tried placing pvc into diy rock during the forming stage to actually create smooth passageways and walls in caves. for example, when ever i have seen eels in pictures etc... there usually in a wall of rock with only their head sticking out. so obviously im assuming there must be some natural rock tunnel. to simulate such a thing could pvc be placed?

If you were worried about the PVC either leech chemicals or a piece being eaten you could wrap the PVC in cellophane when making the live rock. Then just pull the pipe adn cellophane out and you have a smooth round cave in the rock.

any need to grease or oil the cellophane to not get it to stick during forming?
