ex cichlasoma

If you want to be super ultra stick up your bum technical, it would be exHeros ...

Were nt these once Nandopsis????? Or should i too find another source of info. LOL

cichlasoma or nandopsis are what i usually go by

They have previously been Cichlasoma, Heros, Herichthys, Amphilophus, and Nandopsis ... I believe in that order as well as each genus was narrowed down to specific groups, leaving sal's orphaned.

Thanks, yes sal's have gone through so many names, i really think wierd they were heros!

All the centrals were Heros once Cichlasoma was restricted, as that was the next 'supergroup.' And since all central americans (except one, Andinoacara coeruleopunctatus) are of the Heroine tribe (small scale cichlids), that is why exHeros would be the 'proper' current one ... though we all use exCichlasoma instead since it was Cichlasoma for the longest amount of time. exCichlasoma would indicate that it was in the Cichlasominiti (sp.?, not at home to look it up - large scale cichlids) tribe, and thus an acara or port cichlid.

But the hobby isn't really that anal or accurate when it comes to the scientific stuff.

Thanks for some very informative posts darth pike.
