is shale aquarium safe?

Im trying to find rocks for my aquarium. My boss came up with the idea of shale; I work at a salt mine, and we ger lots of shale in thep process of mining. Is the shale safe for my aquarium?

I have some shale that I took from a river in one of my tanks with no problems, I dunno about shale from a salt mine though.

I buy raw natural slate from a landscaping store and only pay a few dollars for huge pieces. The only metal it's known to leach is iron, and that's good for plants or inert. You might look into that.
