The Harvard astronomer sounds like he wants to make sure he gets recognition before his time of influence is up. Or at least that’s how the writer is making him sound.

As for the space force, I could see it being named The Guardians. It sounds good, is fitting, and the public would love it simply because of the movie guardians of the galaxy being such a hit.
I could see the government not using it purely for that reason though too. I just picture them picking a really lame name, like astroman. Lol

Yes the prof does sound like he has a flare for the dramatic.

This years threat assessment should be coming out soon but this space force is a real thing. Page 13 discusses it.

"Both Russia and China continue to pursue antisatellite (ASAT) weapons as a means to reduce US
and allied military effectiveness. Russia and China aim to have nondestructive and destructive
counterspace weapons available for use during a potential future conflict. We assess that, if a future
conflict were to occur involving Russia or China, either country would justify attacks against US and
allied satellites as necessary to offset any perceived US military advantage derived from military,
civil, or commercial space systems. Military reforms in both countries in the past few years indicate
an increased focus on establishing operational forces designed to integrate attacks against space
systems and services with military operations in other domains.
Russian and Chinese destructive ASAT weapons probably will reach initial operational capability in
the next few years"

It is scary, but not surprising.
With each new advancement that is made, world governments will find ways to use them for war. Space has just been on a count down till it happens.

It’s scary and overwhelming to think of what the future holds.
