My arowana has been jumping out of its tank a couple of times since I bought it. Is that a sign of stress? if so, what can I do to reduce it? I already check for pH, water clarity, and temperature. I turn the lights off for a while, but now it's on a normal on/off cycle. Maybe it's just adjust to the new tank or something... Its appetite is rather low too. It will only eat when it really needs to. Unlike my other fish, which will eat until they explode.

I think arowanas are just naturally inclined to jump from water no matter what. I remember going to a lfs and as soon as the guy opened the top of the tank to an arowana holding tank with lots of 8" silvers in there, about 6-7 of them bailed out all at once. It was kinda cool actually, haha. :D Though it can be caused by stress, it usually isn't. Just gotta keep a tight lid on it.

Aros jump lol.
My friends aro jumped behind his tank where he went undiscovered for a few hours.

they always jump..in the wild they leap out of water to get insects off branches over the water....[YT]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/s7EVn84WV_M&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/s7EVn84WV_M&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/YT]

Mine jumps out when I clean the tank or when he gets freaked out, he cleared 8" last time and made it over my canopy and then dropped 5' to the ground from that point. Whenever I change the water I move the cover until I ready to pour in new water.

mine jumped years l8tr after getting him, got tangled in my wifes hair....ahhhhhh:eek:.....if they jump for food, its stress:grinno:???? they see daylight and go....its just there nature

is it possible its stray currents in the tank as well? Though they do jump for food in the wild, I do believe that they jump in our aquariums due to stress as well. I don't think they are seeing anything they want to eat above the tanks.
I have heard of some using almond leafs to help calm arowanas down. helps put tannins into the water, may even act like a cat nip type idea to the fish.

Heyy i think its normal man bt just be cautious n yaa mayB its ur water pump alsoo whichh mayB tooo powwerful for ur aquarium zat make ur arooo feel tired n uneasy...kozz also hve z same experience soo i change my system n make it more calm...lol \^^

would my aro be stressed out if I trap him in a large net while doing water change? How do you guys do water change with aros?

btw, it's a skinny 6in. long silver aro. I have it in a 29 gallon alone with a pleco; plenty of space for now. I'm not gonna move it to the big tank until it gets bigger and fatter.
