is ten gallons large enough for a convict pair? i want to start a breeding operation. i have plent of room under my 180 for a couple 10's
. also would a sponge filter be good for them? all my other filters are large canistors
i know i have to have a pot in their would bare bottom sand or gravel be best?
do they need light? as they will be under my stand they wouldnt get light unless i install some lights.

i breed them in my 55 right now but all the babys are getting eaten

Mabe for the fry but not the pair what I wuld do is suck or net out the fry and place them in the 10 gal till they big enoph for sale or another tank. Hope I have helped.

I would let them breed in the 55 until the fry hatch. If the 10 gallons are right below your 55 place them down there and fill them about 1/4 full of water, then siphon out the convict fry into the ten gal. Simple.

But the real answer to your question is, no.

its been said the 10 may be good to grow out your fry but not for the pair

for a quick growth rate i have found the longer the tank the better. 10 gallon will work just not as efficiently. sponge filter with bare bottom is the way to go so the fish can find all of the food. once the fry are over 2 weeks old do 20 percent water change every 3 days to keep the bottom as clean as possible this is what i have found works the best with my peacocks. hope it helps you

If you only have a ten gallon than why don't you think about smaller ciclids like rams or even shell dwellers. Either way good luck. I just started a 12 gal breeding tank for guppies and cherry shrimp. Live bearers are also good to breed in small tanks.

I've bred convicts for several years and contrary to popular belief, yes, a 10g is suitable for the pair and babies. A breeding pair won't grow to the Biblical proportions that make people think you can't keep cons in a 10g.

A sponge filter or UGF is pretty much the only way to go. Stop cleaning the tank as soon as the eggs are laid (water changes are ok). The babies need the partially eaten and digested food. The parents produce it for them from the food you give them. You don't need to supplement with fry food but it won't hurt. (I collect the dust from other fish food and use that as fry food.)

Cons can get big suprisingly. I tried to did up some old pictures of my pair... Buddy was 6 inches and Baby was 4. I say 29G atleast.
