I have the 2004 mini atlas and I just keep finding contradictions to what Ive learned both here(MFK) and by personal experience. Dont get me wrong, we ALL owe something to Dr. Axelrod, but is there a better more up to date source for fish info?

if you want a good general fish book, with a good plant section, a good fish section with lots of info (not just symbols like the mini-atlas has) get the Baensch Atlas volume 1.

its amazing.

the photo atlas is amazing too, but it is strictly an ID book only - but has over 4000 fish in it!, meant as a companion if you have the other volumes to refer to for the information.

but all are fantastic.

high recommended, and cheaper now that they are available in soft cover.

What does the better one cost?

not sure. best bet is to either check out your LFS or check on amazon.com

if you really want to cover a lot of bases, get the baensch altas Volume 1 AND the baensch photo atlas.

unless you are into rare fish, you really don't need much else in terms of fish books.
The rarer the better nowadays. Want extensive cichlid ID book (SA/CA) to know if I come across rare stuff when Im out and about.

I have the cichlid atlas. it is cool, although it is almost exclusively dwarf cichlids. An Apisto lover's wet dream.

I have volumes 1-3 and 5.

volume 4 is not yet out in english.

they are worth their weight in gold IMO.
No doubt but Im into the plus size fish if you know what Im sayin'. Dont think Ill ever be needing an ID for any dwarves. But thanks for the info.
