Ok, I traded a guy some dead saltwater coral for some small power filters and approximately a 40gal tank (36Lx15wx16t). He says he used the tank several times as an aquarium with out any problems and we filled the tank up at his house and no leaks. I know the glass is not tempered because there is a chip in it. My concern is the glass is 3/16 inch thick. I have a 20gal (24x12wx16t) that has the same thickness of glass. Is 3/16 inch thick glass correct for an approximately 40gal aquarium or is this tank for reptiles. I checked on line and found info saying the glass should be thicker, but I know the 20gal is for fish and has the same thickness as the 40 or so gal, so this is my delema. Anybody have some suggestions or input regarding this?

All my 30g and 40g tanks are 3/16" & not tempered. One even has 2 cracks (6" & 4") for over three yrs and still doesn't leak (until I just bragged on it probably) but it's an outside tank for aging water or quarentine/hospital.

the height is what makes the difference for glass thickness, so I think it would be ok. My 29 is the same.

Thanks Dr Joe and rallysman, I'm going to silicone the inside edges, it didn't have any, so this should reduce my worry. I'll fill the tank outside after the silcone drys for a few days and then if all goes whell it will be a new addition to the addiction.

Thanks again.

I filled the tank Sunday night (looking good so far) and was able to see the following once it was filled. American flag (in black and white) and “built by R. Piceno”. This appear to be only half of the original tag so I am assuming the other half would tell me the manufacturer and possibly if the tank was made for fish or reptiles. So from this is it possible to tell what brand of tank this is and if it was made for reptiles or fish? Thanks in advance.

If it's holding water than you are fine. I know the tanks that we sell for reptiles can hold water, so most likely the tank you have can.

we sell that exact size tank at the petco, but its a reptile only tank.
maybe if you reinforce the corners it would be a little more trust worthy.

The tanks we sell can hold water, unless otherwise noted, but most can hold water.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Still sitting in the garage no leaks so far, might go another few days or a full week to decide it is house worthy. I'll then need to find a glass top or plastic hood.

missyme06 - Was thinking about doing this. If I ended up going to glass place to get a custom glass top, I might have then cut me a 2-3 pieces to re-inforce the sides and maybe a center brace.
