I was wondering if there is a difference in dats. Are all dats brackish or somewhat and can be kept in fresh water. Or are some more of a brackish fish and some are fresh water. I just got a silver dat. Is there a difference between them and other dats. What are more of their requirements. Do they need to be kept in brackish or can they be kept in fresh with some salt added.

Bump

silver dats tend to be more brackish.. the other datnoids that come from asia (cambodia, sumatra, indonesia and new guinea) do well in fresh ;)

What Kido said.

Only datnoid that needs brackish is the silver.

Just make sure you have basic to alk PH for all Dats. They don't seem to do well in Acidic waters.

What they said about Silvers only need Brackish:thumbsup:

Fresh with some aquarium salt should be fine. In the wild they come from brackish sometimes but not necessary

of course there are differences! they're totally different species! lol

new guinea and silver datnoids are known to be brackish, but silver tigers seems to do better in that particular envirnment.

I know there are different sp. but I was just wondering if I should keep my silver dat in brackish or can I switch it over to fresh and just add salt.

what do you mean switch to fresh and "just add salt"??

adding regular salt doesn't make a tank brackish, and it does not substitute for a brackishwater tank.

you can keep silver datnoids in freshwater. it's just that from my experience, they seem to be more prone to infections.
