Is There A Gar For Me?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Florida, spotted, and shortnose should all do quite well in a pond that size. depending on your temperature conditions and if you are going to bring the fishes inside at any time, a tropical gar would also do well. good luck!--

Will the pond be indoors or out? If indoors, Sol hit the recommendation on the head. If outdoors, you may be limited depending on where you live. The more north, the few species can be kept. If your area receives any snowfall, you'd be limited to longnose gars unless your pond is much larger.

oops i meant to say indoors. i have been doing research and iv read that they can hit the side of the pond or tank and break their backs. can they still live a good life with a broken back how would be a good way to combat this? i am building the pond so as long as it didnt cost a ton would it help to put padding behind the liner? thanks guy mfk is the best!

The tropical gar requires the higher end of the thermometer than NA gars. And, the FL and spotted gars will do just fine in tropical temps, too. I have several tropical gars that I keep in a round polyethylene bin. The round walls allow them to glance off if they run into it, saving them from spinal injuries. These bins are lightweight and you can get them with 2ft x 2ft viewing windows. My 650 ran me less than $600 delivered (aquaticeco.com).
When it comes to the spinal injuries, the gars can survive, albeit lame, provided their rear quarters don't suffer paralysis. If that happens, it's best to euthanize them since their existence will be a constant battle to avoid drowning.

thank you. i think i will look into getting some spotted gars. anyone know a good place to order that i can make sure that i am getting a spotted and not a florida?

Thats an iffy one...You would be better off catching them yourself or finding someone within their range to get them for you. Spotteds are really not very common in the hobby.
