Is there a rule that heaters should be placed vertically in an aquarium to work the most efficient? Figured there must be studies done or something? Trying to heat a pond that is open and keep it warm. Want to heat it the cheapest way possible. We are in a recession, you know?

IMHO heating in the cheapest way possible means spending big upfront and reaping in the end. It cost more to get efficient equipment that last, but it pays for itself in the end. If its a large pond you might need to look into like a gas or oil water heater, I have seen larger electric inline water heaters for ponds 1500 - 12000 watt inline heaters; but seems like it would cost more to run.
chet and nfored are right- how can they help your heating dilemma if they dont even know if the pond is between the christmas tree and the fireplace, or next to the snowman under a foot of snow- above ground or below? insulated or not? still water or heavy flow? and indoor or outdoor?
and I briefly tried passive solar- I put a small pump in the pond connected to a black garden hose laying in the sun and back into the pond- no matter how slow the water went through the hose the winter sun didnt heat the hose enough to warm the water- considering the experiment didnt cost anything, it was worth a shot
It is a 200 gallon stock tank in a spare animal room indoors. 7foot by 3 foot. above ground. I am trying to keep it 77f. I am using 2 stealth 250watt heaters now. The room is kept at 70f. wondering if it would be cheaper to heat the room than use aquarium heaters?? Thanks guys.

I think heating the tank would be way cheaper- after seeing how well chesters above ground, outdoor pond maintains its temperature, due to it being insulated- Im sold on wrapping above ground ponds with at least the 1/2" styrofoam thats used under the siding of a house- I know you said a lid is out of the question, but with the insulation and a lid you can probably get away with 1 250w heater- why is the lid a no-go?
as far as the heater placement lay it low and horizontally, and near your filter or pump outlet- I prefer them in the sump, but when youre counting degrees, its best to keep it near the fish
