I have 4 clown loaches all around close to two inches. Two of them have more of a greyish tinge and other two more solid black. thanks

I personally experienced that with a group I once had. I thought the ones displayed the grayish color were the 2 subordinate Clown Loaches.

I tend to disagree. As CL get bigger they tend to lose their contrast, and often the biggest and alpha CL have the least colour.

Clean water, tank setup, and quality feed. I've seen 10" washed out, obese clown loaches versus 10" vibrantly colored, lean and muscled clown loaches and feel like top tier tank upgrades like auto drip, high (>10x turnover)riverine flow, and high quality, nutritional feed makes quite a bit of difference.

Can't back this up with my own experience currently, but I am in the running so to speak. Get back to you in ten years lol.

Agree, and find this with most every species.
The more water changes, and higher vitamin content food, the better the colors.
One of the reasons I tend to do every other day 30-40% water changes.
