i was wondering is there a way i can recycle my water i have a 55 gallon poly barrel and wanted to start saving my water and reuse it later especially when the 90 is up and running how could i reuse it pump it through an r/o let it sit with some media in it to remove nitrate any suggestions is this possible? thanks in advance Nic :)

mine is used to water the garden and indoor plants. high nitrates make it very ideal for this purpose, if you really wanted to help the environment you could use it to flush the toilets in your house

i was thinking putting it back in the tank eventually not flushing my toilets

i guess this is not possible

Actually the denitrification (an opposite of nitrification), i.e. converting nitrate to gaseous nitrogen through nitrite, is possible and, as far as I know, is done on some "closed cycle" fisheries. But this process requires special anaerobic conditions and is definitely not practical for a home aquarium.

Just water the plants with it, mate :D . You could probably also use this water to grow some "green water algae" to feed daphnia or infusoria for your fish.

out here in the desert where i live, [fabulous Las Vegas] water usage is expected to be used wisley. we are on a watering schedule. only allowed one day per week in the winter. i use the 60gallons out of my tank to water the lawn. wish i could put back in the tank. at least im not wasting though . good question..

you can say that again. i use a 30 gal rubbermaid tub, that is about 240lbs that i have to drag through the house, then out into the yard , then i have to try and spread the water around about 400sq. ft of grass., twice a week. :swear:

im sure if its the water its self is hard to get, then it may be worth the expence running it threw a ro filter. if you run it threw an ro its got to come back out pure again so its like starting from scratch. but remember you will still loose some of the water as waste so it might only be worth it on huge water changes if water is very hard to get hold of.

i was thinking an r/o but not worth the waste of the filter...was thinking of pumping it in to a 40 gallon container and putting some plants in there lil water garden and check it if it is clear then i can top off tanks with it inbetween water changes
