Im probably going to get one off craigslist this week. (balls cheap I may add). Anyway its going to be running a 55 with angels and severums in it. Is there any real reason why I would need more then the XP2?

Biologically speaking, yes it will do fine. Mechanically speaking, it may not quite do it, though this is easily remedied with regular water changes and gravel vacs.

Sounds good. I do 20% changes on all my systems at least everyother week if not more so I didnt see why it wouldnt flow plenty. It seems like everyone on here really over does filtration sometimes. Not that thats a bad thing :grinno::grinno:. Im just getting lots of tanks going all at once so moneys tighter then it would be if I was only doing one.

I used an XP2 on one of my overstocked 55s and it worked like a champ. I just kept up with the WCs on a weekly basis. Never had a problem.

I think it would depend on how the tank was decorated...

Decor breaks up flow and with such low turnover rates dead spots will be easily possible.

but an XP2 has a flow rate of 300gph without media, which in comparison to other comparable canisters, is fine.

I wouldn't say it was a low turnover rate for a tank that size.

remember, with canisters, 4x turnover is fine because of all the media capacity.

its only with HOB's you need 10x because they hold so little media in comparison..

look at it this way:

many many fishkeepers run 55's with AC110's as the sole means of filtration.

an XP2 holds about twice as much media as an AC110 and the flow is still pretty good..

The XP2 only runs at about 175gph actual flow. with the 1.75 liters of media one basket can hold the bio will not be an issue. The flow is not enough IMO to effectively filter a 55g mechanically speaking.

I base my opinion off of a 55g bare bottom that was filtered by a xp3(185gph actual flow). I set up the output in a couple different ways to direct flow across the bottom of the tank, but could not get enough flow to move the debris all the way across the tank.
