Is there anyway to make a fish less aggressive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In short-nothing really. Tank size is the only long term solution. I've tried every myth from lowering water temps to rearranging the tank w/ no success.

sometimes you can put an aggressive cichlid in a much larger tank than required and they will still kill their tankmates. some individuals just claim huge territories and won't allow their tankmates to live.

spank em!! lol i saw that on judge judy once, I think it was judge judy. anyway, this guy spanked his fish literally lol!

Tank size doesn't necessarily true. Some fish are gonna be A holes no matter what. But the best trick I have found is to take away territory's and add more fish to dilute aggression.

Yeah you maybe right. Sometimes one fish will go after only one other and won't stop until its dead.
I had this happen recently where my h. Deppi almost killed my a. Robertsoni in my 150g. T
I may never be able to keep these two together again.

It's very possible. Would help alittle if we new what kind of fish it is. I've kept all kinds of aggressive fish from Pygos to Mbuna. Excellent water quality helps, sometimes tank space, sometimes overcrowding. Not keeping females helps as well as not making them gluttons. Dithers are a big factor. Don't feed them live food. Keep challenging them with fish of equal size and strength. Schooling helps. Temprature helps. The best remedy is experience. With time you will be able to keep Oscars with Angel fish. No problem.

Heres what i have done forever and with great success. everyone can flame me but i dont care the proof is in the pudding. lower temps do help, feeding small meals at the same time multpile times a day, lots of females, overstocking (no dithers just more of the same temperment fish), breaking line of sight (tall plants and ornaments that dont let fish target one and helps any cashing being broken off faster), and most important space. ive seen this exact tactic being described in an article in tfh magazine i cant remember which one. ive been doing this and i keep multiple midas togehter, flowehrons males together, 2" fish with 9" fish, paratilapias of both kinds and more. do i recommend this stocking no. have i ever told anyone on here asking for tankmates to mix these things no. because it works for me doesnt mean it will work for others and ive never been able to tell some honestly "yeah ur fine with three midas together with flowehorns and oscars go nuts!" so i answered ur question by my experience.
