Hello--

I've got good news and bad news. The good news is my tank is healthy. The bad news is I've had a population explosion of leleupi cichlids.

I know if I leave them alone, they will keep breeding even more, but I have such large and elaborate rock work (that I am very happy with) that I don't know how to get rid of them. (I mean trade them in)

I thought of a predator, but that isn't precision enough, so it occurred to me that because they are smaller than my other fish, there might be a trap I can use. Where they go in for food but can't get out. Is there anything like that?

Any ideas are welcome. I suppose it will get to the point where I'm going to have to take all of my rocks out and fish them out, but I would really rather find another way.

Thanks!

there is the brilliant invention called the fishing rod for those fish which are too large to fit in a bottle

yeah, I can just picture someone walking into my house and see me standing over my tank with a fishing rod. call the men in white coats.

jumbo koi could be a good way to control the number of cichlids, koi eat every fish eggs they can find! And are your fishes in a pond or a giant tank?

Ive made a few traps before worked like a charm. I made small traps to catch small fish out of my Reef tank. I bought these plastic boxes http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=220& the clear tall ones. The top lid part discarded. I then glued plastic channel pieces on the edge of the open end and made a sliding door that slid in the channel. The door would be held up with a piece of fishing line. The trap was kept in the tank till the fish got used to seeing it. When the fish swam in I would drop the door.
I recently made a big trap to catch out my 2" dovii fry from there growout tank. I made this cause after netting a few they got wise to the net and was actually quite I pain catching them. This trap was basically a 10"x10" box with hinged door on the bottom. I suctioned cupped it to one end of the tank so the open end would be above the surface with the hinged door hanging down open on the bottom. This was also always kept in the tank so the fish was not afraid of it. I would put floating pellets into the box confines on top. The fry would swim up to feed then I would slowly pull the door shut trapping them. Then I would just net them out of the box from the top. I could trap 25-30 at a time.

If traps fail take pictures of the tank, and roughly outline decoration placements by "tracing" them on the tank glass with a dry erase marker.
That's also how I design my tanks - with the marker
