I have a 75g goldfish tank with a bare sand bottom right now, with a Pothos plant in a HOB filter. I'd like to add a planter box like in this photo below for a single species of plant for Nitrate control and looks. I've had a planted tank before that just grew out of control and was so stuffed with decomposing detritus in unreachable areas that nitrates were through the roof and algae took over. I want to avoid that this time around and would like to have a short photoperiod to keep algae at bay. I like the look of the photo I posted below, but I am worried that algae will become an issue again if there aren't enough plants and too much light. Am I wrong? Is this feasible? This photo appears to be hornwort, but i'd like something that actually roots into subtrate.

I feel like your goldfish are going to see hornwort as a salad bar. You may be better off going low light and grow anubias which grows better on a porous rock or wood rather than in the substrate.

After some research I found that the photo is actually of the Foxtail plant, I do like anubias too. My only concern is having the light on for 5+ hours a day and developing algae everywhere. I had originally wanted to completely get away from a planted tank, but I do love the look of live plants. I guess I could add more Pothos to combat excess Nitrates.
