My lfs got some peacock gudgeons in… I’m confident I can keep a pair well fed, but I’m not sure it would work.
The only tank I see them in is my 36 gallon Amazon puffer tank. Ideal params are in line with my tank. They eat the same things my puffs eat. Bioload isn’t an issue because the tank already shows 0 Nitrates and gobies are known produce next to no waste.
I guess my biggest problems are compatibility and utility. Nothing out there on going with puffs, but my amazons are harmless. Then there’s the skunk/sun loaches…more harmful but barely active. Seems like something nobody tried because of associated risks…so there isn’t an easy way to test this.
Then there is their utility. As I mentioned, they eat exactly what the puffers do. Sounds good until that is also what the loaches and tetras eat. Short of the pleco, everything is primarily carnivorous, and having another mouth to steal worms just sounds like a bad idea. I’d much rather something that will pull its weight and give me a hand (fin?) with algae (platies perhaps?).
All in all, I probably should wait until I can give a tank to them…but would it be a smart move to try now? Or just go with a safer option like livebearers?
