Bought these two today, was told by the store that they were Cichlasoma maculicauda, but their tank was unmarked... Are they maculicauda ?
They are around 2"

The bigger one:

Its definitely not a Maculicauda, it's either and adolescent fenestratus or a bifasciatus.

I would lean more towards a fenestratus, as it has more blue than anything. Bifa's horizontal line usually doesn't travel all the way back, it starts half way through the body and ends at the tail.

Regardless, nice fish!

Not a BB, But both the Fenestratus and Bifa lateral lines travel the length of the body,
if you go by Rapps Gallery. Synspilum does not.
You can't really tell at this size but I would Guess Bifa or Fen unless of course it is
just a hybrid. Only time will tell.

they were fenesratus, bifas dont have vertical barring, at least not like that.... to bad, beautiful fish when older.

Looks Fenestratus to me, though the spots on the face and colour does remind one of Hartwegi!
Like the others, I too do not think it is a black belt.
