So i am planning on getting a 11" xingu I pike. I have a 125gal i could keep him in for a bit with a 7" wolf fish, 8" ornate bichir, 6" arowana. But i also have a 140gal planted with 5 red bellies (4") and 2 golds (3"). Do you think they would leave him be because he is so much bigger? anyone have experience with these pike? can they defend themselves?

agreed, that would be foolish...

now when you say that you have a tank with 5 red bellies and 2 golds, what exactly do you mean by golds?

Gold Piranha- (Serrasalmus Spilopluera)

Awesome, everyone I talk to says reds and golds don't mix well together?

I'd love to get one, if I knew it was going to work out.

you really should buy another tank so you can get those golds out of there, that is not going to end well. you more than likely have s. maculatus, but either way, they do not mix with p. nattereri. without trying to sound too harsh, it is foolish to try to mix these two species of fish in a tank that small, regardless of whether you think it is working well so far, it will not be successful in the long run.

everyone you talk to is absolutely right

Well, i got the 5 reds first, raised them for about a month, then got a gold P. The reds actually seem very fond of the gold piranha, it's kinda like their little sister. I had them all in a 125gal. The gold shoaled with the reds within a couple days and appeared to be the instigator in most feedings. After starting my 140gal planted, i moved the gold piranha a week before the reds, and i would swear that the reds were depressed. Since reuniting the reds with the gold, i have added another gold piranha. It's only been a few days with him in, but he is smaller than the original gold, and the original gold seems to be keeping him away from the shoal. wonder how long that will last.

it won't last long...

any bonds that you are seeing between your fish are entirely in your head. trust me, they are all looking at each other as potential meals... i strongly recommend that you separate the macs from your tank full of natts before you end up with dead fish.
