So I recently purchased a 180 glass tank as un upgrade from my 135 and I've aqcuired a 60 gallon from a friend. Now I've never used a sump filer before but I've always wanted to (I couldn't on my last tank because it was upstairs and my old man was already complaining about too much weight but now I'm on ground level so no worries there). The tank came with an eshopes overlow box and all the stuff needed including a 30 gallon that was being used as a sump with some bio balls and gravel. I'm. Thinking a super easy diy sump would be to put the 30 inside the 60 filled with media and letting that tank overlow into the 60 that's got some gravel and a bunch of live plants as a refugium from which id pump the water back up to the tank. I got the idea from my buddy at the lfs but that almost seems too easy of a set up, it'd increase my water volume by 45 gallonns and allow use the power of the plants to do most of my work. What do you guys think? Any suggestions or does this seem like a good idea?

Quite a bit of filter for a 180.

The 30 alone would be plenty for the 180.

others will chime in, im new to sumps my self.

general rule for sump sizing is 1/4 of main tank volume

Yea I'm a believer that there's no such thing as over filtration, and I want the extra water volume. My other option is instead of using the 30 I could just use the 60 gallon with the gravel and plants for biological and I have a magnum 350 and a fluval 405 that can be my mechanical filtration.
