Is this a Granulosus???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Unfortunately no. It is a completely different species, a synodontis petricola most likely, although it could be another type of synodontis.

Here you go, embedded the vid for you. Gotta agree looks like a hybrid, but still a nice looking Syn! I like the white fins, you have no idea how jealous I was about to get if you had an actual Gran. It's one of my wish list fish. Synodontis Granulosa, Australian Lung(which I have sourced but lack the necessary funds at the moment), Scatophagus Tetracanthus/Tiger Scat are just a few on my list.

I am not sure as I am no syno expert. How much have you paid? Assuming you didn't get cheated, a real granny like that will set you back $300-$500.

I know though that grannies being so expensive tempt many "hybridizers" to take a shot... and the trade is plagued by fake ones. If you intend to know for sure and learn along the way, I'd suggest to post the vid and several good screen shots on Planet Catfish - many keepers there and many experts that will tell you right away. Beware though that several fakes recently came close to where it took even experts a while to figure out.

He was in with a tank full of mixed malawis that I recently bought, 37 fish in total for £80. So whatever it is, it was a nice surprise! I was just looking through google images and he seemed to look more like a granulosus than petricola. Its quite a wide fish compared to the petricolas I've seen at 2.5" . Thanks for looking. .
