I baught my Florida Gar last year almost at the end of October, it was about 5-6 inches in length.

About 5 months have passed now and my Florida Gar is a feet or about an inch more in length.

Is this a healthy growth rate? Or is this slow?

im confused...how big is it now? if it is a foot (12") that is normal growth. figure about an inch per month.

I meant to say it is a foot ( 12" ) in length or an inch more ( 1' 1 inch ) in length.

So it is normal then, that's good and thank you for your reply.:) Isn't that a Florida Gar in your avatar? What a beauty!

You are welcome! that's sure bigger than mine. It's great how they look different within the same species, of course nothing is a carbon copy. Below are a couple of pictures of my Florida Gar taken months ago when doing water changing. He / she sure has grown more and looking different ( as in scales and body pattern ) since then. Mine only wants live feeders:( ...I have tried others and nothing worked yet..I starved Him / Her and He / She only went to smell the Cichlid sticks, chuncks of chicken meat and once attacked a mealworm and spit it out..hmm.

What about yours?

mine eat smelt and shrimp.... they never get to the live feeders because my rays take out the feeders as soon as they hit the water... I guess they get one or two but thats it out of a dozen or more feeders.... mine are about 14"

were your gar raised on prepaired or live? how did you get them to start taking prepared?

starve them for almost two weeks before they would try it now they hit they smelt the second it hits the water... I am not a big fan of live feeders I have gotten all my my fish to accept prepared and fresh foods heck even my rays have tried the pellets they didnt like them but the tried them which shocked me.....

im trying to get away from live foods too
