Is this a Heros Notatus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Considering it has eight bars, it appears to be Heros sp. Inirida. They look like notatus but usually have red or maroon spots instead of black spots, and eight vertical bars instead of nine. They are fairly uncommon and beautiful fish.

Hi Ryan. Thanks for the quick reply. The store thinks it is a Green - I was pretty sure it was not. Just could not quite identify the exact sort of severum. It seems to be male and quite aggressive.

It's definitely a male. Was it a trade-in or something? It's a shame there's only one. A pair would have been a nice find.

A green severum would have nine bars. As far as I have seen, only rotkeils and sp. Inirida have eight.

It looks like it has faint worming pattern under the eye, but I don't really see much on the cheek or across the bridge of the nose. My gut would tell me it's a female. It could also be a sub-dominant male but even then they usually have spotted cheeks/faces. I will say that when I bred notatus, it took the F1 males a long time to get their facial spots. Not sure why. So there's the potential it's also a male who's too young to have markings.

I'd almost be tempted to get them if you wanted to breed a fairy uncommon, undescribed species of severum. Hell, I'd even take them just because the male is going to be a very nice fish once it's settled and conditioned in a home aquarium.

Haha... The male would be $30. I am so tempted but have to wait until Monday. One sales guy wanted close to $85 for the two. Whilst the one I met during lunchtime and the second visit only wanted $45.
