Hi I got these from a supplier in Indonesia. It looks so much like a baby zebra shark but it also looks so much like a catshark as well. Anyone want to ID it?

Peace

I can tell I'm 120% sure - it's not a juvenile Zebra Shark(Stegostoma varium/fasciatum) - new born Zebra pups may have similar coloration, but they are larger and have different markings, as well as have a fin morphology that it very similar to the adult Zebra.

Also the sharks in these photos look exactly like the shark that has been identified by Some of the more knowledgable professionals on this board as the Indonesian Bamboo or Hasselt's Bamboo(Chiloscyllium hasselti). Also the very fact that you said you got them from a supplier in Indonesia. Which is where hasselti is native to.

It's actually pretty amazing how much bamboos change from their juvenile to adult. In some cases the only way to tell the pups & adults are the same species is by their fin placement & morphology

Thanks everyone so much for your help. One of the guys at the Aquarium of the Americas also confirmed that the shark is NOT a zebra shark. Cool. Now I am having trouble feeding the darn suckers! I tried force feeding them (gently) but they are not eating anything. So I bought some clams, oysters, and squid and left small bits in the bottom of a yellow basket where I place two at a time. I'll check in the morning if they ate or not. Thanks again.

Peace

Yeah, I hate to say it, but they don't do well. Indo bamboos are showing up more and more in the trade. "True" zebra pups are much much larger than these guys are.
We have a shipment of them coming in tomorrow (don't ask, they were ordered while I was out of town).

thanks everybody for your help. I was able to get half of them to nibble on some clams. In any event, they are all sold to somebody and I'm shipping them this weekend. End of story. You guys were very helpful.

Peace

Matt - Your people ordered a shipment of Zebra Pups? That should be fun to work with, if you ever have the need to sell one let me know. I would be more than willing to construct a pond large enough to house one. By far my favourite shark. Pictures are a must.
