is this a red isletas and if so what is the sex?

Looks like it may very well be. Where did you get it? Where did they get it? There should not be too many degrees of separation between this fish and Jeff Rapps. He's claims to be the only one to import this amphilophus species. I have a large f1 pair from him. When they were young they looked like yours only with a more rounded mouth. I'll see if I can find pictures.
