did you just get them.....they looked stressed waith a lil while then take more pics and put them up

Look normal to me too. And just because they are lighter doesn't mean they are necessarily stressed. My little monster has been like that lately and she has been eating voraciously (which is a good sign when they are eating well that they are healthy).

Yes they are standard Dempseys...

There is no way to tell visually if they have any recessive genes, but when buying from a LFS there is no reason we should suspect they have recessive genes... Breeders are too greedy to pass off fish with expensive recessive genes without raising the price ;)

As you just got the fish, it makes sense she looks stressed... and I do agree that lighter coloration is a sign of being stressed. Some fish are naturally darker than others, but they lighten up when stressed and darken when confident...

By the way... the one pictured is a female...

Because of the gill plate right? Is it possible to sex them only using fin morphology?

Yes my opinion is based on gill plate...

Fin shape is a very unreliable way to sex Dempseys. While it is common for males to have longer/pointier fins... it is just as common for a dominant female to have longer/pointier fins than a subdominant male...

Gill plate coloration does not depend on the fish's place in a pecking order and is a far more reliable way of sexing Dempseys...
