Hello all. I bought this thinking it was a reticulata. It is about 4 inches in diameter and is a female. She is healthy and active and eating well on live blackworms. I've had her about 2 weeks now.

The reason I'm uncertain is the tail length to body size ratio seems off. The reticulata I see in pics have a tail that is linger than the body by a 1.5:1 ratio. Mine is more 1:1. I'm pretty certain it's a reticulata but want to make sure.

Here are pics.

Btw, it's in a 75 grow out for now. It will go into a 180 with a mini marble I hope to secure in the future and/or a male reticulata or both. Future tankmates will be caquetaia myersi.

viper0397 viper0397 's all have long tails but were all captive bred.

Where'd you pick it up at? Was it captive bred?

If it was wild caught the tail was probably damaged and you ended up with a short tailed Ray.

Either way it's a nice Ray.

Looks kind of like a morph to me. Here are pictures of mine.

Thank you. The tail is full and the end kinda fans out as opposed to a stump or a point. Probably a morph from vipers comment. I guess the chance of me finding it a male mate will be tough since it appears reticulata can mean more than one species.

Reticulata should not mean more than one species. Teacup means more than one species. There really is no such thing as a teacup.

Morphs. That's what I meant. Mine seems to be a reticulata but tail length differs from you. I'm more a splitter than a lumper...unless j have a different species.

Any ideas what it is?

I have had one of each of the rays shown here, both sold to me as retic. I mean OP pattern ray and viper pics ray, the one in vipers pic got a lot bigger and was much more aggressive, the other stayed smaller and was more timid.

Interesting. Thanks for chiming in. Different sizes, tail lengths, and behavior coupled with alight variation in pattern appears that this may be a species complex.

I hope I can find more of these as I like the idea of them being smaller.
