Is this a stem or substrate plant?

As title states, I don't recognise this; I think it's a stem plant, but just want to make sure before it dies either in substrate or out of.

^ I'm honestly not sure? Definitely looks like a stem plant of sorts though???

Maybe you need to ask one of the more knowledgeable plant people, since im still learning my way around a lot of plants...

Needle leaf trident java fern, this is a rhizome plant similar to anubias which will do best planted on driftwood, or on a mat. Java fern propagate two ways, one being via their rhizome (as you can see in the picture) and secondly via black spots coming from under their leaves.
