I picked up this Chinease Algae Eater (CAE) a while back just to keep the glass clean. He is in a 180 gal with a large Trimac, a 6 inch Texas and a 6 inch Rafael Cat. He knows better than to challenge the Trimac, but has recently become very aggressive with the Texas. I am not sure how he interacts with the Rafael Cat.

Is the CAE a threat to my Texas and Rafael Cat?

Thanks!

This may belong in the bottom dweller forum, but I don't know if a CAE is a catfish or a loach.

They tend to suck the slime coat off of their tankmates, so by doing that will more than likely piss them off and get killed.

As CAE's get older they become more agressive and stop eating alge. They can not really become a thret to the fish you have but will become a great annoyance. It might end up dead if it pisses off the wrong fish. Imo just get rid of it.

lol just trade it for a pleco, this guys gonna piss off a texas or something and die!

I agree with Dmaan. if you get an armor covered pleco, it will just keep to himself (usually) but worst case scenario, he's mostly bone, or have you tried giving that CAE some wafers, something to help his appetite?

I had a CAE alomst kill a firemouth that was a little bigger. The FM was picking on it, and the CAE then started sucking on the side of the FM, pinning it to the substrait. After that I fed that damn CAE to my oscar.

I would worry more about the raphel then the other two. How big is the texas? A full grown texas is a force to be reconded w/.

Also, I'm not sure what the CAE maybe doing after the lights go out. It could be sucking slime coat off the others when they are asleep.

yes it is a threat, and dont think your trimac is off limits. my large CAE began latching on to my midas so she killed it but it left large white patched on her where it had sucked her slime off. it was just mean so tubby should it who could be meaner.
mine was well fed on a mixture of foods with hikari cichlid gold as staple so it wasnt doing it out of dietry needs.

i will never have another and would actively discourage others from it too.

can we say fresh water version of lamprey

Thanks for the advice.

The CAE is history.
I have too much invested in my cichlids.
