Is this a true cross river puffer? It is from thatfishplace and I think they got it from rehoboth aquatics. How much do about 12" cross river puffers run in price? How much do small ones cost?
I concur that it is a T. pustulatus. The red dotting and the color intensity can come and go depending on mood, substrate, and lighting. If you are looking for one, contact Toyin @ Rehoboth - he is the source for most in the US, I believe.
To me it appears to be a young/stressed Pustulatus, but I went to thatfishplace/thatpetplace and did not find one listed. All I found were Mbu, Congo and the common GSP and Figure eight.
Also Toyin doesn't have any and wont for a while, I check in with him every so often. Been looking for a while myself.
T. pustulatus is a varient of fahaka last i checked. there was a write up about it somewhere. they are found together in some places. i think the article i seen said they may change it to the lineatus species but as a color difference. correct me if i am wrong. but i want one still
They also believe the is population crossovers which result in hybrids between the two.
Some Fahakas when young appear to have spotting which spread and connect as they get older to form the lines. That is why it there is confusion when getting them at small sizes. Sometimes in certain conditions the still appear to have spotting within the lines when larger.
Which could be the case here depending on the size of the specimen.
I to would like a pure Cross River just like Norbert has.
Hey Norbert I still would take yours off your hands for you.
