If I had to guess I'd lean towards male, based on coloration. But its still too small to be sure. I basically look for male traits such as certain coloration, fin shapes and color and any hump on the head present.

i was thinking male but i would have thought the fins would have started to get longer, anyone know what size the fish is approx when the fins start to grow longer

Male!.......Its green marks on his gill plate give it away...Males will little green lines on their gill plates and female will have a thick, smugged green lines....and his color is of a male, his fins have not extended yet but they will in the next couple of weeks....good luck!

Also, if you want to be sure...look at his anal fins...if they are blue then its a HE and if they are green then it is a SHE......
