Is this an actual Jack Dempsey cichlid??

...there's so much red tone on him. The pics don't do him justice. He's one of the most beautiful JDs I've seen, if so. Found at the local Petsmart. Maybe a hybrid? What do you think?

Yes that is a JD some of them have red coloration like that may be from where it was collected.

Agree with Tom, there are location variant JDs with plenty of red.
I remember back in the late 80s or early 90s that Don Conkel found some strains in the Yucatan that were even more bright red, he wrote an article for TFH mag showing pics
