Hello,

I bought a 55 gallon on a homemade wood cabinet over a year ago. I haven't set it up as we're weary of the risk as it was previously repaired. It was filled with water/fish when I bought it. Apparently, the previous owner was performing a water change when the side glass panel popped off. They repaired it with a large amount of silicone and 6 inch pieces of (what looks like plastic frame) in the middle of the frame(on the top and bottom). It's.. difficult to describe. The top and bottom braces are both gone/broken(perhaps why the side "popped off"). I haven't wanted to risk the lives of my pets or our house by setting it up but I'd like to, if it's safe. Opinions? I've attached a couple of pictures and I can take better ones.

I did not understand what you meant about the additional pieces of plastic frame.

As for setting up a tank that was previously repaired, I would not have an issue as long as it was done well. As in good clean lines, silicone where it is supposed to be - but I would definitely want the plastic frames on the top and bottom.

If you are really worried, you could always remove the piece that separated and do it right. This way you also know exactly what silicone was used, it's your work, etc.
