I noticed this on my driftwood today:

It is some sort of fuzzy looking substance.

A little background:
I got this driftwood down at my local river (Great Miami). I then soaked it for 24 hours in bleach water, and then soaked it for a week in non-bleached water. After that, I put it in my tank and it has been in there 3-4 days. I pretty much keep the lights off at all times, other than a few minutes for feeding time each evening. The driftwood has obviously not sunk yet, just currently waiting for that to happen.

The tank is a 220 gallon tank with a 55 gallon sump. I'm currently running about 1600gph through the tank.

This is pretty normal on fresh driftwood. Iirc it's just bacterial growth. You can remove it yourself or a pleco would do it for you - in any case it's harmless.

Ok, great. I probably won't worry about it right now then. I don't really want to keep a pleco in this tank because I have fire eels in it and don't want the pleco messing with their slime coat.

Absolutely normal, happens on a lot of new driftwood, and will as mentioned dissapear on its own after time, or you can manually remove when doing water changes...

Happened on some of mine too, it dissapears after a while. Don't worry about it
