Howdy!
got a 370 gal. tank and am going to build a 135 gal. sump with overflow system 4 it...
sump dimensions (feet): 3.9' x 2.97' x 1.77'
135 gal sump x 18 = 2,428, so i will need a 2,428 gph pump.
the closest pump i found for 2,428 gph is a magdrive 2400 gph...
there will be 2 return pvc pipes of 2" each...
how much of the sump should i use 4 filter media and the pump?
is all this correct? its my 1st 1, so bare with me...:headbang2

I would assume you can fill it up with as much biomedia as possible. you are making a wet/dry chamber, correct? You should probably also leave enough room for heaters and any other equipment that you don't want in the tank.

I get more like 153g from the converter on here, but that's neither here nor there since you won't fill it up. (and 135x18 is 2430 ;)).

How are you going to pre-filter it?

Why did you pick 18x turnover? What are you going to be stocking?

Do you have a basic design in mind?

the 370 gallons would turnover 6.5x. I don't know why you picked 18x the sump volume though, although I think 6.5x is probably fine.

Those links have lots of good info. The water should fill up one chamber of the sump, and then drain over the top of the biomedia compartment. The water level in that part of the sump stays low, so the biomedia isn't submerged, it just has water flowing over it. Then the pump is at the end, and you can make some baffles to keep bubbles from getting in the pump.

im going to pre-filter it with bio balls in the overflow system
going to stock it with an arapaima, rtc, gar, pangasius, aro and p.bass
i picked 18x turnover cuz i thought the more the better, but then i realized the water would be too turbulent for aros and such...correct?

I think he means mechanical filtration to prefilter it, like some polyfiber or filter sock or something. You dont want your biomedia getting covered in gook and losing surface area.

That's not pre-filtering, that's biological filtration.

Correct, unless you can get them to wear little life preservers when they get tired ;).

Right you are (that's why it's called pre-filtering)

Also remember that that 2400 gph is at zero head.
