Although they are slow to get to that size I think the price is a little steep.

This is true. Dats are never stable at my LFS, but once they're in a proper tank they color up nicely.

Agreed and for my money I'd be more concerned about the stripe pattern,or in this case,what you can see of it.If the pattern was to my liking I would pay the money for the fish.
 
I have an 11 incher that never goes stable and a 13 incher thats always stable and all my smaller ones constantly change. If you think its worth it then i say buy it
