Just looking for some feedback on the diet I'm running on my CA community.
I have Gold Saum, JD, Carpinte and Firemouth with a stack of giant danio. The fish are still very small between 1-2".

My current practice is to feed twice a day in a two day rotation:

Day One
Morning - Freeze-Dried Blackworms
NLS small fish 0.5mm
Evening - NLS small fish 0.5mm
Hikari Cichlid Gold

Day Two
Morning - NLS small fish 0.5mm
Hikari Cichlid Gold
Evening - NLS small fish 0.5mm
Hikari Cichlid Gold

Is this enough variation? Should I introduce frozen Bloodworms or something into the diet and if so how often? I have tried the odd bit of algae wafer but the Cichlids don't seem to go for it.

The spec on the blackworms is:
Nutrition

  • Crude Protein 66.35%
  • Crude Fat 13.87%
  • Crude Fiber 0.24%
  • Moisture 12%
I think this should be good for the growing fish provided I don't over do it?

dont worry, thats plenty of variation and a good diet. i only have two types of food for my fish(well three including veggies) that i rotate occasionally and all my fish are happy and healthy

yup plenty of variation

Thanks for the feedback le patron. I guess I'm mainly concerned about getting enough vegetable matter into them but they don't seem interested in whole vegetables or algae wafers. Maybe something like a sera flora added in once every two days would help?

noonein2 - http://www.blackworms.com.au/index.html. is where I got mine. He sends international and with our rubbish Aussie dollar it might be competitive with the guys out of California (not sure if they FD though *shrug* ) Either way I ordered 50gm of freeze dried and it is S**tloads, it will last for months and I have 235G, 180G and 30G tanks that I'm feeding.

are you showing off or what? LOL. That's a great diet. Once the fish get bigger ween them off the blackworms though. That's too much protein for adults. I feed my fish top shelf foods but it's usually just a drunken stumble into the basement before I go to bed. A handful of this, a handful of that, some flakes.. a few pieces of frozen. LOL.

They'd be healthier if you skip out on feeding them 1 day a week though. They don't need to eat like humans and not eating for a day will clean them out.

Thanks Camphilophus that was a helpful post. I figured the Black worms would come off the menu eventually...what size do you think I should start phasing them out?

I had thought to introduce live earthworm once the fish were bigger say 4"+, maybe once a week. Thoughts?

Maybe add in some krill

I feed my fish Hikari gold pellets, krill, algae wafers, fish flakes, Fly Larvae (maggots),frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp.

Occasionally I might give them a live shrimp or mealworms. I jsut rotate all this but mostly feed pellets.
