I have a set up a six foot in diameter and 15" high kiddie pool to replace the real pond i got that needs patching. (if I can even fix that) it has a crack thats about 4" near the edge ,were the walls begon to rise. Were the water pressure would be the most. I put a return pump for a sump that is rated at 2400 gph. I put a sponge inside the pump just before the intake. The pocket on the intake was big enough for a sponge to fit in. I also tied a bag of activated carbon and going to buy some biomax later also .i also have a 700 gph waterpump in there too. Its only filled up to about 7" cause there is only a small pair of hrps on there witch will soon be my rtc instead. Till it reaches 2' then it will go in a bigger pond .
Theres some pics.

Yeah, you're gonna need some bio media.

Not for a rtc. Run it through some scrubbies or ceramic rings

Spot on. Ditch the carbon, invest in some ceramic! Or w/e u can get, fluval bio max, ac bio max, seachem matrix, api chem stars are all good choices imo, a few handfuls would work, more the better. There are a lot of advantages to bio, I've never had a bb bloom when cycling a tank or in general, always spot on params.

I saw a thread where the guy had an open sump design with 2 pumps running. Each pump had a tray attatched as a prefilter. I believe they were designed for a pond filter. Anyways he had a big bag of ciramic rings on top of each tray. This should work better than you current setup, though I have no idea where to find the tray pre filter things. HTH

I have this little bucket that I was going to use as a sump tower but couldnt figure out the to get it working properly. I was going to put a hole in da bottom bucket have the pump output push the water up in the bucket and into the media and let the water over flow back to the pool. This is the bucket
