My green texas, who I thought was a female, and one of my BGJDs has seemed to pair up and are exhibiting spawning behavior. The Texas has turned almost black along her(his??) belly and the vertical bars are also darker. They have been cleaning out one of the flower pots and guarding it fiercely. Both have their breeding tubes out. The texas's breeding tube appears to be smaller and pointer than the BGJDs. Is it even possible for them to produce fry? They are in a community tank so I'm sure if there are fry most won't survive. I'm not sure that I would try to save the fry as I'm sure there is not a huge demand for texas/jd fry lol

It is possible. There's even been cases of two females pairing up and laying (obviously unfertilized) eggs.

The same thing hapened with my (both Female) Jack Dempsey and Black Convict cichlids. are you sure they're both female?

I think a texas would cross with my dog if it had the chance they hook up with anyone

I'm not 100% convinced that my Texas is female, but I did have a "Sex my fish" thread for her and everyone thought she was female. I know for sure that the BGJD is female as she has spawned successfully(before I got her).

Lol I almost spit coffee on my keyboard!

Tex x jack hybrids are cool fish. If interested in a hybrid project you should pursue this breeding. I thought about trying to bring out some ebjd color with Texas body shape. Jack Texas hybrids have been called blue galaxy cichlids.

Very interesting! I'll have to see what happens between them. I've got 4 BGJD females, 1 male EBJD and the texas so if something is gonna happen I'm sure it will just be a matter of time. I just did my weekly WCs today on all my tanks and my pink cons are in the process of spawning right now...hopefully the BGJDs and texas will make something happen too lol
