I have a Vortex model D-1 Diatom filter which has not been used in the past decade. But the design has not changed.

I have used it for vacuuming the gravel i used to have so i wouldn't have to do as many WC's.

It seems to operate just fine. No noises, no screeching (bearings seem ok), and it seems to collect a great amount of fine particulate.

Right now I have a DIY sump that keeps up with the bio-load perfectly but lacks in the mechanical department. Since the intake is an overflow box leaving the aquarium floor without filtration.

I guess what I am trying to say is, will it do a good job with the mechanical filtration?

Most diatom filters will clog very very easily since their fabric is very fine. So yes it will work....but with larger particules it will clog very very fast. Most use them to get their tanks clear, not exactly for long periods of time.

Ime they are best used for mechanical filtration to polish the water like once a week.Ive never run them continous cause they do clog quickly.Easily backwashed but I dont feel like doing that everyday.Good filter for what it does though.

Running one full time would be a lot of work. I would use an aqua clear power head with the quick filter if I just wanted mechanical. I have one hooked up to an 18 watt turbo twist the quick filter captures particles down to 1 micron in size and you can run the power head at 300 gph or more for the bigger aqua clears.

the HOB is an option for down the road...

I was thinking more budget like DIY but if that doesnt pan out i may just do a powerhead

My first thought was why is your mech. media not doing it`s job?

never run those filter without dietomaceous earth. The filter bag itself i snot design to be the filter, only to house the powder.

They are fantastic filters though. I would install one after your primary filter.

I have a sump running great but it only takes water from the surface.

Just wanted to kno if i could use/make something else such as a DIY Mech filter of some kind
